Is it possible to convert a normal van into a Refrigerated van?

As a retailer of new and used vans, I am asked this question many times over the course of the year: β€œIs it possible to convert a standard van into a refrigerated van?” The answer to this is yes, it is possible and in fact, fairly straight forward. Obviously as we make our way through summertime, the relevance of this question increases.

What is a refrigerated van? A refrigerated van, sometimes known as a fridge van or a freezer van, is a multi-utility vehicle designed to transport perishable items. It has multiple uses and is tailored towards the food and catering industry, wholesale and retail vegetable supply and ice cream vendors.

Our favoured route to converting a standard van is to use an insulated panel kit, which helps to cut user-costs and increase efficiency. Three element panes are fitted to the loading space, making it lightweight – which increases payload and helps to make the vehicle extremely temperature-efficient.

The lining that is used is made up of a layer of insulating foam which has been bonded to a layer of high-spec plywood, with a fibre-glass reinforced outer layer. The result of this is to create an inner surface which is smooth, easy to keep clean and highly durable. Another feature of a standard fridge van conversion is the strong laminate flooring with insulated wheel boxes which restrict the amount of heat that enters the van. This is generally all finished off in a striking blue gel.

If you have a frozen specification van, and you only require personal access – side and rear doors can be removed and replaced with a single RVL low temperature plug door assembly. This is supplied with a lockable push handle and internal emergency release. If a pallet access is required through the rear, the original doors are usually removed and replaced with RVL low temperature asymmetric plug doors.
